“The Flamenco Clan” tells the epic story of four generations of the
Carmona clan of Madrid: gipsy musicians, dancers, and instrument-makers par excellence.
The film takes a journey to the very roots of flamenco in the wine cellars of Sacromonte, the starting point to reflect the development of contemporary flamenco and modern Spanish society. Tracing members of this remarkable family from the Franco era through the exuberant 1980s to the international success of their band Ketama and its revolutionary Nuevo Flamenco sound, the film culminates with a family reunion which gathers the entire extended family for a celebration of the role music has played in keeping them together.

The Granada artist Manuel Gómez Rivero has had his work studio in the Alhambra Palace since 1996. During these last 10 years, he has walked through It’s gardens, astonished by the outstanding beauty of its fountains, gardens and architecture. Today, as other artists from other countries have done before him, Manuel Gómez Rivero has looked for the most beautiful sights and views, placing his easel in the best positions to capture reality and another reality that he contemplates with the imagination of a painter.
The exhibition features a collection of drafts, pre-drawings, etchings and oils of major size that are executed with technique and sensitivity that complements the written reflections that appear in the catalogue of samples. Included is a notebook of his journeys, which demonstrates the things that he has lived with during the creation of these works. Additional info >>

Painting Exhibition by José Antonio M. Bernardo: Pasacalles August 4 through September 15 Presented by Galeria Gala, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes de Chicago 875 North Michigan Ave. Suite 2940 Tel. 312.335.1996 Free Admission
What is self-expression? A good number of contemporary art critics, somewhere in their writing, typically ask this question and they will look bad if they don’t answer convincingly that self-expression is when José Antonio Bernardo paints Salamanca or Venice or Paris. And, to know this is not necessary to compare him to other painters past or present who have painted the same parts of the same cities. It may be that they choose the same tones of brown, but everything else is different: the decision to put one object next to another, or to separate certain colors, to an extent that the paintings can be characterized not by their similarities but by the way in which they differ. The cityscapes may be the same, but the grey used by one is a little farther to the right and a little bit darker than that used by the other.” (Gonzalo Torrente Ballester)
